Fair Director & Art Expert, Hugo Barclay shares his insights into the trends to watch at this year’s Battersea Spring:

Sparking joy: “Against a winter of rising prices and economic uncertainty, we’ve certainly seen art buyers looking for pieces that bring hope, inspiration and calm. Art is a vital creative outlet for everyone (whether you have the artist gene or not!) and having work in our homes that soothes or makes us smile is becoming increasingly valuable. People are seeking out artworks that show us there can be light even in darker, wintery British days. Think Marie Kondo’s famous motto – ‘Does it spark joy?’”

K-Culture: “From big blockbusters Squid Game and Parasite to pop bands Blackpink and BTS, it’s safe to say Korean culture is exploding – and this is reflected in the art market too with a host of Korean artists being snapped up by collectors. We’re thrilled to welcome a cohort of South Korean galleries to our London Fairs; at Battersea Spring, look out for Seoul-based gallery Mookji Art Collaboration who specialise in promoting the work of early career and emerging Korean artists, and first-time exhibitors Gallery Millcreek, hailing from Gyeonggido.”

New classics: “The star artwork of the Spring Fair campaign is a collage by Clare Packer (represented by Kittoe Contemporary) who’s latest series gives a cutting-edge twist to ancient Grecian and Roman inspired figureheads. Clare’s monochrome and terracotta heads have attracted an impressive roster of collectors, including former British Vogue Fashion Director, Lucinda Chambers. Also reimagining the antiquarian is Syrian-born artist Omar Khalaf. After moving to Vienna, Omar worked as a set painter for some of the city’s most prestigious opera houses, and this helped inspire his latest ‘figures’ series, which reimagines classical sculptures in paintings of vivid colour (Available from VC Art).”

Artist on my radar: “To prepare for a Fair I like to pore through our exhibitors’ offering, and in doing so I always find artists to add to my watch list. For Battersea Spring, I’m looking forward to seeing the work of Kristina Chan, showing for the first time at Affordable Art Fair with Hancock Gallery, whose beautiful mixed-media photographs explore the boundaries of individual and collective memory; the atmospheric abstract etchings of Gregor Hiltner (ars-tis); playful collages by Gráinne Nagle (Smithson Gallery) and the fine art lithographs of Japanese printmaker Chika Osaka (Hanga Ten Contemporary Japanese Prints) – amongst many others!”

Original painting for under £1,000: “What’s great about our fairs is that you can truly see the best in contemporary affordable art of all styles and mediums – from printmaking and photography to sculpture, ceramic, collage and mixed media. But, a continued favourite amongst our art buyers are original paintings – and you can find some truly fantastic work for under £1,000 at Battersea Spring – in my book, you don’t get much better than that!”
