In classic international tournament tradition, musicians and fans across the country have been creating new songs and chants in honour of the England football team. However, what makes this World Cup different, is that it’s taking place in the lead up to Christmas. As a result, many of the songs created this year have festive twist…
Three Lions (It’s Coming Home for Christmas)
One of England’s most famous songs ‘Three Lions’ has been re-written for the winter World Cup in Qatar. The original, which was written by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner in 1996, has been released with a brand new festive music video that includes the likes of Sir Geoff Hurst and Lionesses Jess Carter and Beth England, following the Women’s Euro 2022 victory over the summer. Baddiel and Skinner have once again teamed up with singer Ian Broudie to record the new version, which has been tipped to be in contention for Christmas Number 1.
So Here He Is, Jordan Pickford
England’s football team is getting its own Christmas song for the first time ever as the World Cup takes place over the festive period. The new anthem is named So Here He Is, Jordan Pickford and is sung to the tune of Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody. The song is dedicated to the England number one Jordan Pickford, while each verse also features different players from the team including Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane, John Stones, Jack Grealish, and even England legend Sir Bobby Charlton. The song is supporting charity FareShare, the UK’s biggest charity fighting hunger and food waste, backed by England striker Marcus Rashford.
Crouchy Conducts The Classics
Former England striker Peter Crouch has formed an unlikely duo with opera star Paul Potts to release a charity Christmas album, ‘Crouchy Conducts The Classics’. Songs including ‘Super Jacky Grealish’, ‘Englerland, Engerland, Engerland’ and ‘VAR My Lord’ see Crouch and Potts deliver an unexpected upgrade to popular terrace football chants, creating reimagined versions of football fan favourites backed by a grand orchestral score and the Paddy Power Choir. The profits from the album will be donated to LTBTQ+ charity Stonewall in a bid to tackle oppression in the 2022 World Cup host nation Qatar and beyond. Additionally, Paddy Power has committed to a minimum donation of £25,000.
Beat The World (Do They Know it’s Coming Home?)
A group of Essex musicians have joined together to release a Christmas single about the World Cup. Terry Tyler, 37, a DJ from Harlow, originally came up with the idea for a single last winter when his young son asked whether the football-mad family would have Christmas decorations up or football flags on display when England feature at the World Cup in Qatar. The idea very quickly snowballed with Mr Tyler spending a day re-writing the words of Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know it’s Christmas’ to form Fan Aid’s new single ‘Do They Know it’s Coming Home’. Just under a year later and the song has more than 10,000 views on YouTube and has already raised a few thousand pounds for the Band Aid Trust.
