Supermodel and global fashion icon, Claudia Schiffer takes readers on a personal photographic journey through fashion’s most illustrious decade – the 1990s – in the new coffee-table book, Captivate! published by Prestel on October 19th in the UK.
Captivate! is a richly illustrated book with over 150 images, including unseen material from Schiffer’s own archives, that accompanies the launch of the first ever exhibition curated by the fashion icon at Kunstpalast Düsseldorf – the city where Schiffer was first discovered.
Curated throughout lockdown, Captivate! brings together for the first time legendary fashion photographers including Arthur Elgort, Corinne Day, Ellen von Unwerth, Herb Ritts, and Richard Avedon, and supermodels including Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer herself.
Offering a new and unique perspective, Capitivate! encapsulates the re-invention, rebellion and innovation of this extraordinary decade. It brings to life an era which saw the rise of a diverse range of young talent, from photographers to make-up artists, who merged the fields of fashion, music, entertainment and graphic art, changing the way we viewed fashion and photography forever.
Claudia Schiffer comments: “When you look at the last wave of the pre-digital age, you see different formats of fashion photography – from fine art prints to Polaroids, contact sheets, fashion magazines, to campaigns and model cards. As curator of this exhibition, I wanted to represent that range as well as include iconic covers shots, runway imagery and candid backstage snaps. Captivate! is a celebration of fashion photography and also of the teams of photographers, models, stylists, hair and makeup artists, and art directors that harnessed the transformative power of fashion.”
Captivate! includes personal essays from fashion luminaries Carine Roitfeld, Christiane Arp and Ellen Von Unwerth, as well as quotes from leading industry figures such as Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful, Grace Coddington, Donatella Versace and Valentino Garavani. This stunning book also draws on a rich panorama of amazing characters and places, which made the decade so memorable.
