This week at Midas 4th-8th November
Theatre productions, a Christmas charity drive aimed at raising funds for Bookbanks, author coverage on BBC Radio 3, panel discussions and new publications here’s what’s been happening at Midas this week:
The LOST Lombi
From Wednesday 6th – Sunday 10th November The Muse Group Theatre Company’s latest production, The Lost Lombi, delivers powerful performances that take audiences on a journey of resilience, identity, and hope, set against the vivid backdrop of the Congo.
Three women, bound by blood across generations, embark on journeys of discovery and healing. One yearning for freedom, one running from the past, and one with a calling to confront it all. Together, they must face their inner conflicts to find peace and rebuild their fractured identities.
The LOST Lombi sheds light on the complex and often hidden realities of child soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), exploring how war leaves deep scars across generations. At its heart, this production is a story about finding humanity in the darkest of times, revealing the strength within us all to overcome trauma, reconnect with our roots, and forge a path toward forgiveness.
With compassion and tenderness, the play reminds us that even in the face of unimaginable hardship, hope endures. As we reckon with generational pain and loss, we are also called to remember our capacity for resilience, healing, and collective understanding.

Books That Give
This week, Bookshop.org launched its Christmas charity drive, Books That Give, a to raise funds for Bookbanks to get books into the hands of readers at foodbanks.
So far, Bookbanks has given away over 3,000 books at food banks since its launch in June of this year, and proceeds from Books That Give will help the charity grow its presence across the UK, with two new sites at the Trussell Trust’s Hammersmith and Fulham Foodbank in West London and the Norwich Foodbank’s Bowthorpe distribution centre opening today!
Ambassadors and authors Elizabeth Day and Andrew O’Hagan are lending their support to Books That Give, which runs in partnership with the Independent Alliance, a community of independent UK publishers. Readers can take part in the drive by purchasing select Independent Alliance titles throughout November and December on Bookshop.org, the online bookshop with a mission to financially support local, independent bookshops. The 30-strong list, featuring authors including Matt Haig, Elena Ferrante, Marlon James and Lemn Sissay, can be viewed here.

Frank Cottrell-Boyce on BBC Radio 3
Frank Cottrell-Boyce, the Waterstones Children’s Laureate, recently spoke on BBC Radio 3 about a concerning trend in youth literacy. According to new research by the National Literacy Trust, the number of young people who enjoy reading has significantly declined over the past year, with a notable drop among boys. Cottrell-Boyce highlighted the impact of reading on young people’s learning, empathy, and confidence, stressing that the UK is at risk of “losing a generation” if this trend continues. He emphasised that fostering a love of reading is crucial for young people’s overall development. Listen to Cottrell-Boyce speaking here.
