Women’s Prize 2024
Midas were delighted to be working with the Women’s Prize Trust this week with a wonderful day of author talks and shortlist readings at Women’s Prize Live on Wednesday and the awards ceremony and summer party for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and inaugural Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction on Thursday. Congratulations to the winners of the 29th Women’s Prize for Fiction, Brotherless Night by V. V. Ganeshananthan, and the inaugural Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction, Doppelganger by Naomi Klein.
Private Eye Paul Foot Award 2024
Congratulations to Tristan Kirk from the Evening Standard, who earlier this week was awarded the Private Eye Paul Foot Award 2024 for Investigative and Campaigning Journalism. Kirk’s winning investigation illustrated how the “single justice procedure” makes justice impossible for people without the means or wherewithal to challenge the system, creating a conveyor belt system that has removed humanity and fairness from the law. The 2024 awards ceremony was hosted in-person at BAFTA by Private Eye Editor Ian Hislop, who said: “Justice is NOT being done but thanks to Tristan Kirk it is being seen NOT to be done!”

INW Announces Local News Commission
Off the back of the inaugural Indie News Week (3-9 June 2024) and the findings of fourth annual Index of the independent news sector, the Public Interest News Foundation (PINF) is launching a new Local News Commission. This new project will bring together 11 commissioners from a variety of sectors – including business, civil society, and television – with a diverse range of experiences to agree policy recommendations ensuring the sustainability of independent local news.

Independent Bookshop Week (IBW), the annual celebration of independent bookshops across the UK and Ireland, kicks off tomorrow (15-22 June)! For the third year, the IBW BookTok Tour returns and will see BookTokers across the UK and Ireland celebrating IBW and sharing content from their much-loved independent bookshops. With BookTokers hailing from across the UK and Ireland, locations include Coventry, Hertford, County Antrim, Kirkcaldy, London, County Kildare, Milton Keynes, Edinburgh, Watford, Glasgow and Caerphilly.
