This week at Midas: 15th-19th April

Our round-up of Midas announcements from the week:

Shane Guffogg’s ‘At the Still Point of the Turning World’

This week at the Bovolo Museum, the world stepped into the whirlwind of colour, contemplation, and cutting-edge technology at Shane Guffogg’s ‘At the Still Point of the Turning World’ exhibition, which debuted during the prestigious 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2024 and features 21 of Shane’s pieces.

In collaborative pieces with AR artist Brayden Bugazzi, Shane’s exhibition seamlessly fuses dynamic abstract paintings with cutting-edge technology and  and aims to provide a sneak peek into the future of artistic expression, enabling a synesthetic experience where colours are perceived as sounds.

In My Skin by Sophie Lee

This week was publication week for Sophie Lee’s debut book ‘In My Skin: Learning to love your perfectly imperfect life’. Published on the 18th of April by SPCK as part of ‘The UnSeen’ series curated by Katie Piper, this bold memoir details Sophie’s inspiring journey following a terrifying accident. We had an amazing launch event at Waterstones Piccadilly, coming together to celebrate Sophie and the healing powers of resilience, kindness and family. ‘In My Skin’ encourages us all that it doesn’t matter how we look or where we’re from, we’re all beautiful in our own skin.

Oxford Brooks MA in Publishing talk

On Tuesday we visited students at Oxford Brookes University to speak as part of their MA in Publishing course. Our Marketing Director Steve Dumughn delivered a presentation to around 20 students on the topic of Marketing in Publishing, covering areas such as resourcing & budget, the importance of positioning, balancing paid, owned & shared marketing strategies and where marketing sits within the publishing structure. A lively debate followed, with questions ranging from the rise of AI and the impact on marketing skills, the importance of imprint branding and cohesion in maintaining publishing lists, and who gets to decide which books are promoted and advertised.

Poetry Prompts

Each Monday, our current Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Joseph Coelho, releases a bitesize #PoetryPrompts video on http://www.booktrust.org.uk/, sharing top tips and celebrating the power of poems. This week’s video was a very special one, with Joseph teaming up with former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen to craft some catchy rhymes and awesome alliteration. Head to the BookTrust website to watch this fun collaboration, which is sure to inspire your own poetry writing!
