Our round-up of Midas announcements from the week:
Affordable Art Fair Battersea Spring:
Affordable Art Fair’s Spring edition began this week at London’s Battersea Park. The first UK fair in their 25th Anniversary year offered a stunning range of contemporary art from an impressive roster of UK-based and international galleries, with an exhibitor line-up of 113 galleries and thousands of artworks to be discovered, priced from £50 – £7,500. Highlights include lenticular artworks inspired by cloud formations by campaign artist Lawrie Hutcheon and a monumental installation titled Flight by Alejandro Propato. The fair also featured a special exhibition celebrating International Women’s Day
Independent Bookshop Week ambassadors and early initiatives launched
The Booksellers Association has announced the ambassadors and early initiatives for Independent Bookshop Week (15-22 June 2024). IBW is an annual celebration of independent bookshops across the UK and Ireland, and the role ‘indies’ play in their communities.
Reverend Richard Coles, Clive Myrie and Kiran Millwood Hargrave have been announced as the official ambassadors of Independent Bookshop Week (IBW) 2024.
Moreover, to support the campaign, spoken word performer George Mpanga — also known as George the Poet — has created a poem that will be shared on social media at 6 p.m. on 19th June.
The national giveaway from National Book Tokens, High Five for Bookshops, is also back for a sixth year, supporting indie bookshops across the UK and Ireland to reward loyal customers. Bookshops participating in IBW each receive 100 vouchers that customers can use to claim a £5/€5 National Book Tokens e-gift card to spend in store.
In addition, people are invited to organise their own Bookshop Crawl to celebrate IBW, using the Bookshop Map on the homepage of the Books Are My Bag website to locate local bookshops.
