12 days of midas banner

Seasonal reads can be a great way to get into the Christmas spirit! We asked the book blogging community to share some of their favourite reads for the Christmas season. Here’s what they said…

Lynda Checkley

Favourite Christmas Read: Hercult Poirot by Agatha Christie

“Agatha Christie is my go to author when I need a good read at any time but at Christmas it has to be Hercule Poirot’s Christmas.  A good old fashioned whodunnit and a great way to while away a few hours on the sofa.  And yes I have four different copies!”

Favourite Christmas Reads: Halfway by Beverley Jones, Shiver by Allie Reynolds and Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

“I don’t tend to read the same book at Christmas but I do look forward to finding a good, immersive read that will take me away – with a bit of crime thrown in – to somewhere with a chilly, snowy setting. These titles have hit the spot in the past couple of years.”

Favourite Christmas Read: On Strike for Christmas by Shelia Roberts

“A woman’s work is never done, or so the women folk of downtown Holly would have you believe. Sheila Roberts’ “On Strike for Christmas” was a fun, chick lit read that left me feeling warm and fuzzy in anticipation for Christmas.”

Favourite Christmas Read: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

“Christmas for me is about traditions, I’ve been reading this every Christmas for about 50 years, now my grown up children are doing the same, we start on the 20th and finish on the 24th. It’s a magical read.”

Favourite Christmas Read: The Islanders by Pascal Garnier

“”I don’t need my Christmas reads to be cosy, and this slice of Gallic noir tragicomedy from the late Pascal Garnier is as wittily dark as they come. It’s freezing in Versailles as a newly orphaned son returns home, meets his former teenage lover and the brother she cares for, and with a young homeless man invited in too, they share a Christmas of reminiscence with consequences…”

Favourite Christmas Read: The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman

“The book that I like to come back to at Christmas is a novella by my favourite author Fredrik Backman – The Deal of a Lifetime. It’s a short read but brings out all the things I love about Backman. It’s heartfelt, emotional and leaves you feeling glad to have read it and ready to take on your day with renewed energy. The characters may only be with you a short time but they burrow into your heart.”

Favourite Christmas Read: Christmas Eve at Cranberry Cross by Kate Forster

“It has all the ingredients you need for an enchanting festive tale, with warmth, humour, and delicious romantic suspense… and lovely little nods to both Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it even scared me more than once, and it made me fall completely in love with the characters!”

Favourite Christmas Read: The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett

“Whilst Christmas is my favourite time of year, the concept of festive reads is a relatively new one to me. But in the last couple of years I have fully embraced it and whilst I enjoy some of the more cosy feel-good reads, I also love something a bit different – and my favourite this year has to be the fabulously fun and entertaining novella The Christmas Appeal by Janice Hallett, perfect for curling up with for a few hours over the Christmas period.”

Emma Alvey, Bibliotreasures

Favourite Christmas Read: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

“I’ve also picked ‘A Christmas Carol’ as my favourite Christmas read as not only is the book heartwarming and filled with festive magic, but the adaptions of it are a core part of my Christmas memories. This book is a classic for very good reason.”
