Wolfson History Prize 2023
On 13th November, Halik Kochanski was announced the 2023 winner of the Wolfson History Prize at a ceremony at Claridge’s in London. Halik won the UK’s most prestigious history writing prize for her sweeping history of wartime resistance, Resistance: The Underground War in Europe, 1939-45 (Allen Lane). Resistance is the first English-language history of resistance to study the whole of Europe, uncovering powerful human stories that have been overlooked across the continent, and revealing remarkable achievements of ordinary people and the formidable challenges that they faced amid oppression from occupying forces. Praised by Chair of Judges, David Cannadine, as a book which is “impressive in its breadth, blending macro and micro history into a single narrative”, Kochanski receives £50,000 while each of the five shortlisted authors receives £5,000.
Patricia Cornwell + Unnatural Death Blog Tour Starts
Patricia Cornwell’s latest thrilling instalment of the #1 bestselling Scarpetta series, Unnatural Death follows the story of chief medical examiner Dr Kay Scarpetta who finds herself in a Northern Virginia wilderness examining the remains of two campers wanted by federal law enforcement. In the build-up to the book’s publication (23rd November) the Unnatural Death blog tour commenced on Monday 13th November, where book bloggers share their reviews on social media. Unnatural Death has triumphed with blogger praise and been described as “thrilling, mysterious and downright unputdownable!” as well as “a fab Christmas gift for crime thriller book lovers…”. Midas will be working with influencer Emily Norris on her long-awaited book Things I Wish I’d Known: My hacks for a tidy home, happy kids and a calmer you. Things I Wish I’d Known is the go-to-guide for easy and original mum hacks and habits and will be published by Ebury Publishing on the 7th of March. BookTastic Family Festival 2023
This Saturday 18 November, BookTastic returns with its Family Festival featuring former BookTrust Writer-Illustrator in Residence, Sarah McIntyre (Adventuremice; Pugs of the Frozen North) and Carnegie Medal-winning author and illustrator, Philip Reeve (Adventuremice; Mortal Engines; Here Lies Arthur). As the only festival in the UK to specifically focus on engaging new readers and their families, BookTastic has a mission to instil a love of reading in ALL children, regardless of background. To make the event welcoming to everyone, nearly three-quarters of the tickets have been ringfenced for children and families worst affected by disadvantage, supported by local and national funders, including Arts Council England and Harpur Trust.
